Cognitive Rehabilitation of Brain Injured

The program for the cognitive rehabilitation of brain injured started in the mid-1990s with one exceptional case – the child (“Alex”) whose entire left side of the brain was surgically removed. Enormous progress made by “Alex” whose conversational speech is currently fluent, and who is capable of reading, writing, and performing other high school level tasks, attracted the attention of the families of Israeli soldiers who suffered brain injury. Currently the program treats at any one time ten to twelve persons suffering from severe brain injury. Some of them are soldiers wounded during active service, others are victims of accidents, terror attacks or stroke patients. Based on the theory of Structural Cognitive Modifiability the rehabilitation strategy is aimed at reinforcing and restoring the existent functions and sometimes creating new cognitive functions in place of those destroyed. The purpose of the therapist is to provide mediation aimed at enhancing neuronal plasticity and independent functioning. Many of those treated following intensive one-on-one long-term therapy, have been able to resume their academic studies or previous professional activity.
