Pre-School Program

THE PARADIGMATIC PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM

Target Population:

Ages: Newborn babies to 7 year old developmentally delayed children.
Problems: Language and communication problems; Autistic spectrum; Developmental delay; Emotional and behavioral problems; Learning deficiencies, attention deficits and hyperactivity; Down Syndrome and other genetic syndromes.

Main Activities:

Dynamic Assessment focused on evaluating the child’s cognitive modifiability and learning potential. Assessments are conducted in a pleasant atmosphere, using dynamic assessment tools developed at the ICELP (the LPAD – BASIC for young children). The assessment is conducted as a part of the learning situation, and the child is offered mediation and encouragement during the entire testing procedure. Interpretations of the results are indicative of the child’s cognitive profile, described in terms of his/her cognitive functions. We recommend that parents be present in the room during assessment. They are provided with explanations about what could enhance their child’s learning capacities.

Pre-school Integration Program is designed to prepare children with a variety of genetic and developmental problems for integration in regular educational settings. The children attend several afternoons a week, participating in small group and individual therapy sessions and mediated learning. The program also serves as a model for training professionals for work with pre-school children. The program is supported by the Kennedy-Leigh Charitable Trust of the UK.

Parental guidance based on Feuerstein’s theory of Structural Cognitive Modifiability and the theory of Mediated Learning Experience is offered to the parents of children who come to the clinic for assessment.

Consultations for educators and medical professionals (speech and occupational therapists) who work with young children using Feuerstein’s theoretical and practical methods.
