Young adults with genetic, developmental and cognitive
problems are trained to become caregivers for the
elderly and handicapped during the course named
after Jenny & George Bloch of Switzerland. Following
the general preparatory training the participants,
most of whom reside at the ICELP’s Mevasseret
Hostel are helped to acquire professional skills
that allow them to provide services to the elderly
and the handicapped. Practical experience is gained
at senior-citizens' residences and day care centers.
The same youngsters participate
in the “Coffee House” project that bring
together three groups of people: the elderly people
in need of social activity, high school students
who learn about people with disabilities and perform
volunteer work, and the above mentioned special
needs young adults. The ICELP’s “Coffee
House” provides lectures, games, music, light
meals and interaction between people who otherwise
may know very little about each other’s life.
